A combination of under counter, strategically placed recess & decorative lighting render an award winning kitchen design.
When planning the lighting in a kitchen it is critical to think about more than just central overhead lighting. Kitchen cabinets, counters & appliances cause all kinds of shadows and hard to reach places for light to shine. Evaluate all the work spaces of a kitchen and make sure there are light fixtures above each work space.
Second, you want to include lighting underneath upper cabinets to eliminate shadows at the back of work stations. Recessed lighting should be centered over the counter between the front edge of the counter and front of upper cabinets to hit all work areas directly where tasks are performed.
This award winning kitchen design illustrates strategic use of the latest in low-voltage lighting
Light falling past the edge of a counter will cause light to fall on the top of your head and create a shadow where your task area needs light most.
LED circular cove lighting in this round kitchen perfectly accents the circular focal island.
Nugget
I always use the latest low-voltage LED bulbs in warm color rendering. The low voltage recessed “housings” or fixture allow for the most efficient energy and cost saving.
Health Alert
Do not ever use CFL bulbs (florescent) as they are very dangerous if not poisonous to your health should they be broken as they contain mercury vapor that is a dangerous carcinogen!
Art photography applied to this kitchen island is highlighted by under counter lighting. The face of the island is covered in custom 3 form material, back-lit with LED lighting for dramatic effect.
We all know that the kitchen is a common gathering place where family and friends create laughter, memories and munchies. Therefore, making sure you have the correct lighting will not only make preparation more efficient but it will also make it more enjoyable.
